HAVE WE GOT A CONFERENCE FOR YOU!!

If you’re not busy setting up trade displays on Wednesday the 6th of May and you’re not attending the Executive meeting, your conference starts at 5.30pm with delegate registration running through ’til late in the 1840 Cocktail Bar on the first floor of the Noahs Christchurch Hotel.

Also occurring at 5.30pm is the Ensign Properties Trust Annual General Meeting, for those of you who are unit trust holders in the NZSDA’s property investment trust.  This meeting will be in the Canterbury Room, also on the first floor at Noah’s.  In fact pretty much everything that’s hotel based at this years conference happens on the first floor with the notable exception of sleeping!  That of course will take place in your hotel room and then only if you manage to get any!  (Sleep that is!)

Thursday starts off bright and early at 9.00am with the President’s Breakfast in the Marlborough Rooms, again on the first floor.  A short break for morning tea and we’re straight into business with the New Zealand Sign and Display Association Annual General Meeting at 10.30pm.  Now the plan is for there to be not too much business this year as the AGM is scheduled to end at 1.00pm then it’s into the 1840 Bar for a buffet lunch before our keynote speaker sets the scene for the rest of conference.

At 2.30pm our keynote speaker, Lee Parore, motivates delegates by looking towards the mind/body connection.  For those who have not heard of Lee, his claim to fame is as a co-director of the Les Mills Personal Training Academy in Auckland and personal fitness consultant to some of this country’s top sports personalities.  Lee numbers among his clients the likes of Zinzan Brooke, David Tua and Sean Fitzpatrick and, outside of the sports arena, the Sultan of Brunei.  He is also fitness adviser to the Auckland Rugby Team.

After a short break for afternoon tea and bikkies we launch ourselves into the weird and wonderful world of the World Wide Web and the Internet which takes us through to 5.00pm.  At 6.30pm we congregate again, this time for the traditional conference photo before heading out through the city in one of Christchurch’s restored trams.  A quick trip around the city and it’s back to Noahs for the Trade Evening Cocktail Function in the Westland Room and Lobby on, you’ve guessed it, the first floor, where there’s plenty of food and drinks for all.

At the end of the night you can retire to the house bar for signmaking yarns and tall stories or head for the bright lights and the casino.  Alternatively, sleep could be a good idea for we’ve a busy day tomorrow!

Friday starts with us revisiting the skills of Lee Parore, to consider the subject of Stress Management.  Again Lee is well capable of addressing us on this matter having lectured in 14 countries on the matter the three components of true achievement - the mind, the body and nutritional life programme.

After a half hour break for morning tea we catch up with a review to the changes of the local by-laws and regional district plans with New Zealand’s most respected town planning consultants, Andrew Trevelyan from Harrison and Grierson Consultants of Auckland.  Your Association has been working closely with Harrison Grierson on the thorny subject of regulations regarding signage - this session provides you with a unique window of opportunity to see how we are progressing on the creation of model sign codes.

At 12 noon it’s all aboard the bus as we head towards Wigram Airbase for a Bar-B-Que lunch, a guided tour of the famous interactive Air Force Museum which contains every conceivable item of New Zealand Air Force memorabilia and then we go wine tasting at a local vineyard.  The afternoon is guaranteed to cater to all tastes.  We return to the hotel at approximately 6.30pm and the rest of the evening is a free night.

Jeff Harvey and Brian Lilly lead us into Jeff’s Tip Time on Saturday morning at 9.00am.  The aim of this session is to provide all delegates with some useful, practical tips designed to save time and effort while producing superior craftsmanship.  All delegates are invited to participate with there being prizes for the best tips and a printed broadsheet for circulation prior to the end of conference that will incorporate all tips presented. 10.00am sees morning tea being served.  After our break we take off the blinkers and consider some radical business thinking with Martin Witty, a business coach with from Wood, River, Hawes, local business strategists.  Thinking outside the square often brings unconsidered benefit’s to the fore.  As our Australian friends are wont to say "There’s more than one way to fillet a feesh" and considering other options can undoubtedly prove fruitful.

Lunch this day is at your own care as the Pool and Golf tournaments are to be played in the afternoon.  The venue for golf is the Harewood Golf Club and the entry fee of $25.00 for members and $30.00 for non-members covers the green fees.  This means you’ll either have to bring clubs with you or hire them from the club at cost. (approx $40.00).  The venue is yet to be confirmed for the pool tournament but rest assured it’s not far off being confirmed.  Both the Pool and Golf tournaments provide transport to a from the venue to registered participants.

Saturday night is the New Zealand Sign and Display Awards night at the very upmarket Christchurch Convention Centre.  If you attended the first event in Auckland last year you can’t afford to miss this one - if only to make comparisons!  A full awards programme will recognise excellence in sign and display making across thirteen categories. Our MC will keep you entertained through a three course meal and wine, beer and orange juice will flow throughout.  At the end of the presentation part of our evening, live music will play until late which means this is where you can let the hair down a bit knowing there’s a bit of a sleep in tomorrow morning!

9.30am on Sunday morning sees the last of the 1998 Conference functions with a fun breakfast that could also carry the title the NZSDA Alternative Awards Night or perhaps even NZSDA Bloopers and Practical Jokes!  Fun is guaranteed for all and it’s a great way to bid goodbye to new friends and old until next year.
