Concept Sign & Display
Petone, Wellington
New Zealand |
A little smaller that some we've had over the years, but
what we lacked in numbers was more than made up for in quality
- quality or work, and the very high quality of the projects
turned out by apprentices, which was very pleasing to see.
If there one thing this year's event was not short on, apart
from talent, it was definitely food. Every time we came close
to clearing the tables another lot arrived, and good tucker
it was too!
Projects to be completed over the weekend included a 30
metre mural for the building site of the new Ronald McDonald
House for the hospital in Wellington. This had already been
designed and sketched out by Phil Swain from Fine Signs. There
was some retro signage to go on a 50s Studebaker truck, some
sponsor boards for Tuatara Brewery and a mobility scooter
that needed speeding up.
In registering, delegates were give the opportunity to choose
from numerous side trips of interest to the average Letterhead.
The Bedplate Press Printing Museum in Silverstream and Oscar
winner, Richard Taylor's Weta Cave in Mirimar ultimately getting
the nod.
As the event was primarily organised by one of our top apprentices,
Nicole Swain, it was fitting that lots of little tests made
up the weekend, some were even used straight from the sign
school's teachings hence the 'old guys' rattling off their
version of the alphabet. Glenda Leete did her version backwards
and upside down in the same time it took others to do it in
the traditional way. (Glenda can also recite the alphabet
backwards faster than most can say it forwards!)
The event was staged at the new premises of Concept Sign
and Display in Petone and business owner, Nick Baty, was so
impressed with the event and the talent shown by the Letterheads
that he's threatening to dust off the trusty airbrush (apparently
unused this century!) and show us what he's made of at next
year's event in Napier.
As always there were many photos taken over the three days,
so let's take a look.
