| The
New Zealand Sign & Display Association recently planned to update a
membership promotion leaflet which, among other things, gave examples of
signage through the years.
One of the photographs that the art studio put forward is identified above. It's some seventy years old and until its demise was featured on a Chicago building. Wanting to do the right thing, we contacted the local New Zealand Coca-Cola distributor to check they had no problem with us using the photo of their seventy year old promotional signage and were told that there was no problem but that the Australian Head Office had to give the OK also. After some weeks had elapsed and no contact was forthcoming from Australia the NZSDA again contacted the NZ office and were told to go ahead, they could foresee no problems - WRONG! Shortly after this Coca-Cola Holdings (Overseas) Ltd informed us that "....company policy does not authorise use of its trade marks to promote third party ventures." Well, we figured that was a bit on the snotty side, we weren't planning on using THEM to promote US, we were showing and example of signage that had stood the test of time. Imagine our surprise when some sharp eyed signie pointed out that there was a major typo in this shining example of corporate signage that we, having seen it so often, took entirely for granted. As the nice people at Coca-Cola apparently don't want us 'riding on their shirt-tails', we offer the above signage as an example of poorly executed, and badly spelt promotion. Can you spot the mistake?
Thank God we didn't put it in our brochure! |
